Kleanza Archaeology Student Award, Indigenous Language Grant

Kleanza is pleased to offer an inaugural bursary program. They are offering two awards within British Columbia: one for post-secondary students of archaeology, within archaeology, anthropology, or First Nations studies programs; and, one for the initiation of, or continued development of, Indigenous language revitalization programs. They hope to continue offering these bursaries in subsequent years.

The student award is valued at $500 and the Indigenous language grant is valued at $1,500.

Kleanza’s Scholarship Award for Students of Archaeology

The inaugural (2015) Kleanza Consulting Ltd. Scholarship Award for Students of Archaeology is intended to financially assist students studying archaeology, and will be awarded to an undergraduate student who has shown promise in the field of archaeology. The award is valued at $500.

Awards will be granted annually in the summer term to a student who is actively engaged in full-­‐time, postsecondary studies in archaeology in the province of British Columbia. The purpose of this award is to provide educational support to a student who best demonstrates good academic standing, along with an appreciation of the current ethics, practice, and concerns associated with current archaeology in BC.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be enrolled as a full-­‐time student (three or more course in an academic term).

The award is limited to students who are enrolled in an archaeology program, or an anthropology program with an archaeology focus, or a First Nations studies program with an archaeology focus.

  • The student must demonstrate full time enrollment in four terms within the previous two years.
  • The student must demonstrate sensitivity to the complexities of archaeology in BC. The committee will consider such criteria as the student’s extra curricular activities, volunteer work, personal research, academic standing (GPA), and references.
  • Previous award recipients are not eligible to apply again.

Application Process:

  • Applicants must submit their application no later than July 1, 2015. The scholarship will be awarded by September 15,
  • Applicants’ application package must include:
    • A one to two page cover letter outlining their eligibility according to the terms noted above, and completed with their name, address, and contact information.
    • Two references (at least one must be academic).
    • A copy of their most recent transcript.
  • The award recipient will be decided upon by Kleanza’s Awards Committee.

Kleanza’s Indigenous Language Revitalization Grant

Nothing makes us happier at Kleanza than giving back to the communities that we work with. Applicants are now invited to apply for Kleanza’s Indigenous Language Revitalization Grant. This scholarship is intended to celebrate the efforts and successes of indigenous people in various capacities of language revitalization, and will be awarded to an individual or group who has in some way contributed to the revitalization of indigenous languages. The award is valued at $1500.

Some examples of language revitalization programs may include:

  • Continuing documentation of indigenous languages
  • Improving linguistic integrity through the analysis of grammar and phonology
  • Teaching indigenous languages within indigenous communitie

Use of the funds can be used at the discretion of the organization. Some examples include:

  • Hardware (computers, voice recorders, writing materials, books, etc.)
  • Software (development, or purchase of, software to aid in language revitalization)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must already have established, or be in the process of establishing, a language program, with clear goals, mandates, outcomes, and outreach within associated communities in British Columbia

Application Process:

  • Applicants must submit their application no later than July 1, 2015. The scholarship will be awarded by September 15,
  • Applicants’ application package must include:
    • Up to four page letter describing the research goals, history, mandate, and successes of the individuals involved, as well as the organization itself.
    • A budget outlining how the funds would be used.
    • A CV of the lead researcher/organizer.
  • The award recipient will be decided upon by Kleanza’s Awards Committee
